Origin of the Order of the Garter
King Edward III founded the Order as a fellowship of knights. The legends say that the court was having a ball and the Countess of Salisbury was dancing with the king when her garter slipped off her thigh and fell on the ground. The other ladies and sires laughed at her but they stopped laughing when the king picked the garter up and put it on his leg saying “Let him be ashamed who sees wrong in it”. And soon he founded the Order for noble knights and the sentence above became their motto and can be seen on their coat of arms ever since.
